“A writer is someone who writes.”

- Pat Schneider

What is the Amherst Writers and Artists method?

The AWA method was started by Pat Schneider in 1980, an outcropping of what was known in the 1970s as the Writing Process Movement, which focused on inspiration instead of criticism. Pat Schneider developed her method as a direct response to many writing programs which focused on product instead of process, asserting that the process of writing can be an end unto itself, and that it is through sharing our writing that we learn and grow. Schneider States:

Whether your purpose for writing is artistic expression, communication with friends or family, the healing of the inner life, or achieving public recognition for your art – the foundation is always the same: the claiming of yourself as an artist/writer and the strengthening of your writing voice through practice, study, and helpful response from other writers.
